Recognition of the National Electricity Coordinator enables tracing the electricity generated by energy companies and consumed by customers.
AES Chile Mining Customers Receive Renewable Energy Certificates
August 31, 2023
The National Electricity Coordinator (CEN) once again delivered RENOVA renewable energy traceability certificates to companies from various production sectors, including three AES Chile customers related to the mining industry.
Thus, the entity responsible for operating the electricity system recognized Teck, Minera Sierra Gorda SCM and Minera Los Pelambres, as well as other mining and industrial companies. AES Chile was also recognized as one of the generation companies that successfully transferred these renewable attributes.
RENOVA is a comprehensive registration platform for the voluntary market of renewable energy attributes in the National Electricity System. The platform was developed by CEN with a technological focus on Blockchain, providing traceability between what energy companies generate and what customers use.
The Minister of Energy, Diego Pardow, the President of the Electric Coordinator, Juan Carlos Olmedo, and representatives of the certified companies and generators, as well as the professional associations supporting this initiative, attended the ceremony where the certificates were distributed. Ignacio Lis, Commercial Manager of AES Chile, along with company representatives attended the event on behalf of AES Chile.
After expressing gratitude for the CEN’s acknowledgment, Lis stated, “AES Chile’s transformation plan aligns with our customers who are also making decarbonization efforts, enabling us to develop renewable resources that will eventually replace our thermal assets.”
Meanwhile, the General Counsel of Sierra Gorda SCM, Rocío Amarilla-Páez, stated that the issuance of these certificates “proves through empirical evidence that we have decreased our carbon footprint during 2022 and our sincere commitment to transitioning to CO2 emission neutrality. AES Chile is supporting us during this transition.”
